Are Dental Implants Painful? What You Need to Know

3 min read · What the procedure, recovery and long-term experience are really like.

Dental implants are a popular way to replace missing teeth. They look and feel natural, and they can last for many years. One question we hear often is whether implants are painful. If you are thinking about implants, it is normal to worry about pain and discomfort, so here is what to expect.

Understanding dental implants and the procedure

A dental implant is a small, biocompatible titanium screw that is placed into the jawbone. It acts as an artificial tooth root. Once the implant has fused with the bone, a crown is attached to restore your smile and your ability to chew.

Treatment usually happens in stages:

  • First, the implant is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthesia.
  • Then you wait a few months while the bone grows around the implant. This is called osseointegration.
  • Finally, the crown or artificial tooth is attached.

Each step is done carefully to keep discomfort to a minimum. Because surgery is done under local anaesthesia, you should not feel pain during the procedure itself.

What happens during the surgery?

Your dentist numbs the area with local anaesthesia. You may feel some pressure or movement, but not sharp pain. Surgery usually takes about one to two hours, depending on how many implants you need. If you feel anxious, tell us beforehand so we can talk through ways to help you stay relaxed.

Is there pain after getting dental implants?

After the anaesthesia wears off, you may feel some soreness or mild pain around the implant site. This is normal and usually lasts a few days. Many people compare it to the feeling after a tooth extraction. You can expect:

  • Mild swelling and bruising around the gums and face
  • Tenderness when chewing or touching the area
  • Slight bleeding or oozing during the first 24 hours

Painkillers and anti-inflammatory medicines are prescribed to keep this under control.

How to manage pain and speed healing

  • Use an ice pack on your cheek for 15 minutes at a time during the first 24 hours.
  • Eat soft foods such as yoghurt, mashed potato and soup.
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol, which slow healing.
  • Keep your mouth clean by gently rinsing with salt water after meals.
  • Attend your follow-up review so any problem is caught early.

Does the clinic you choose make a difference?

Yes. Careful planning reduces trauma. At Dental Arch we plan implants with CBCT 3D imaging and, where suitable, guided implant surgery, which helps place implants precisely and gently. Look for a provider who explains the process clearly and tells you how pain will be managed. See how we plan treatment on our technology page.

What about long-term discomfort?

Once an implant has healed and the crown is in place, most people feel no pain at all. An implant acts like a natural tooth root and should not hurt during normal use.

If you do feel pain months or years later, possible causes include:

  • Infection around the implant (peri-implantitis)
  • A loose implant, or an implant that has failed

Both can be managed, and the sooner they are seen the better. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are the best protection.

Final thoughts

Dental implants are a safe and effective way to restore a smile. Some soreness after surgery is normal, but it is usually mild and temporary. If you are worried about pain, talk openly with your dentist about what to expect and how you will be kept comfortable. A healthy, confident smile is worth it.
