Laser Gum Depigmentation in Gurgaon: Procedure, Cost and Recovery

Laser gum depigmentation lightens dark gum pigmentation using a diode laser to remove a thin surface layer of gum tissue. At Dental Arch, Gurgaon, it is done in a single appointment under local anaesthesia, costs from ₹10,000 (typically ₹10,000–₹25,000), and most patients recover within about a week.

What is laser gum depigmentation?

Gum depigmentation is a cosmetic procedure that reduces dark patches on the gums. The colour comes from melanin, the same natural pigment that colours skin. Melanin sits in the surface layer of the gum (the epithelium). Pigmented gums are harmless and very common, especially in people with darker skin tones, but some people feel self-conscious about them when they smile.

In the laser technique, a diode laser removes the thin pigmented surface layer. The gum underneath heals as a fresh, lighter layer. Our clinic uses a BIOLASE diode laser, a soft-tissue laser that works on the gum and does not treat the teeth.

Who is it suitable for?

Laser depigmentation is usually considered for adults who are healthy but bothered by dark gums that show when they smile. We typically see patients who:

Suitability can only be confirmed after a clinical examination.

Step-by-step procedure: one appointment

Laser gum depigmentation is planned as a single-visit procedure. Here is what happens.

  1. Examination and photographs. We check your gum health, how much gum shows when you smile, and the depth of the pigmentation. Photographs help us plan and compare later. We also explain what the procedure can and cannot do.
  2. Gum cleaning. If needed, we clean the area first so the gums are healthy before treatment.
  3. Local anaesthesia. The gums are numbed with topical gel and local anaesthetic, so you do not feel pain during the laser step.
  4. Laser removal of the pigmented layer. Using the diode laser in light contact with the gum, our dentist removes only the thin pigmented surface layer, working carefully along the gum line. Protective eyewear is worn throughout.
  5. Cleaning and protection. The treated area is wiped clean and we check the result. Stitches are generally not needed. Sometimes a protective dressing is placed.
  6. Aftercare briefing. You leave with clear instructions on food, cleaning and medicines.

The time depends on how much gum is treated, for example the upper front gums only or both arches. We tell you the expected time at your consultation.

Benefits

Published clinical studies of diode lasers for gum depigmentation, including a split-mouth randomised trial comparing laser with scalpel, report good aesthetic outcomes with this approach. Most studies are small and follow patients for a limited time, so we describe results cautiously.

Risks and limitations

It is a minor procedure, but not a risk-free one. We want you to know the limits before you decide.

Smokers: tobacco darkens gums and slows healing. Cutting down or stopping before treatment gives a better result and protects your gum health.

Recovery and aftercare

Most patients return to normal routines the same or next day. Eating comfortably and surface healing typically take about a week, and the new gum continues to settle over the following weeks.

Aftercare tips

Call us if you have heavy bleeding, pain that increases after the first few days, swelling, or fever.

Comparison with alternatives

Several methods can remove gum pigment. The best choice depends on the case and the clinician's training, and studies comparing them are generally small.

MethodHow it worksPoints to note
Diode laserRemoves the pigmented surface layer with light energyPrecise, little bleeding, usually no stitches. Pigment can return. Needs careful technique.
Scalpel (surgical scraping)Pigmented layer is shaved off with a bladeWell established. More bleeding, usually needs a dressing, and healing can be more uncomfortable.
ElectrosurgeryRemoves tissue with electrical currentGenerates heat and needs great care near bone and thin gums.
Gum graftPigmented gum replaced with lighter tissueMore invasive, with a second surgical site. Rarely chosen for cosmetic colour alone.
Bleaching creams or "whitening" gelsApplied to gums at homeWe do not recommend these. Evidence of safe, lasting results is limited.

For comparison data, see this study of electrosurgery versus diode laser. You can also read how we use the same kind of laser for other soft-tissue work in our laser frenectomy case report and on the laser dentistry page.

Frequently asked questions

Is laser gum depigmentation painful or painless?

The procedure is done under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during it. Afterwards the gum can feel sore for several days, which is usually manageable with the pain relief we advise.

How long does laser gum depigmentation take?

It is done in a single appointment. The time depends on how much gum is treated, and we confirm it at your consultation.

How long is the recovery?

Most patients feel comfortable and are eating normally within about a week. The gum keeps maturing for some weeks after that.

Are the results permanent?

Not guaranteed. Pigment can return in some people over time. Avoiding smoking and keeping your gums healthy helps, and we discuss this at your review.

How much does it cost in Gurgaon?

At Dental Arch it starts from ₹10,000, and the usual range is ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 depending on the area treated. We confirm the final cost after examining you.

Is it safe? Does it damage the gums or teeth?

Performed by a trained dentist, it is a well-established minor procedure. It treats only the surface layer of the gum and does not treat the teeth. As with any procedure there are risks, listed above.

Can I eat normally afterwards?

Eat soft, cool foods for the first few days and avoid spicy, hot and crunchy food for about a week.

Are dark gums a sign of a health problem?

Usually not. Even pigmentation across the gums is typically natural. A new, single or changing dark patch, or darkening with other symptoms, should be examined by a dentist or doctor.
